Why intentional branding is so important for your business

The other day I went for a massage, and the massage clinic’s branding was very confusing to me. I felt like I only half-belonged there, which really stood out to me and inspired me to share the reasons why consistent branding is SO important.

Picture this: When walking up to the building, their logo was super bold with navy and light blue text; which gave off a masculine feel. Upon entering the clinic, I noticed a few things: they offer naturopathy, reiki, and traditional Chinese medicine, along with massage. They also had crystals, sage, salt lamps, and essential oils for sale. Their branding did not match the type of services and products they offer, at all.

It was a very holistic place, yet their branding did not reflect that at all, right down to their business name.

Now, perhaps they pivoted at some point to offer more holistic services, but their branding remained the same. I don’t know the whole story, but I left there feeling (although relaxed from my massage) a bit confused about who their ideal audience is.

As much as I did enjoy my massage, this is not a place that I will be raving to my friends and family about. When you walk into a business, that first impression is SO important. You want your clients and customers to feel at home, and this feeling is created by:

  • Knowing your ideal client/customer inside and out

  • Educating them on how you solve their problem

  • Tailoring their experience to appeal to them

  • Leaving them with a memorable and lasting experience that they will want to talk about

Branding fully encompasses everything in your business

From your visual assets (logo, social graphics, print assets, etc), to who you are speaking to (your ideal clients), how you speak to them, and your physical space.

You want your clients or customers to feel welcomed and comfortable when they interact with or visit your business. Consistency across your brand builds trust, and trust means repeat business or referrals, which means money pouring in that supports the growth of your business!
